14. Pharaoh Hound

The Pharaoh Hound is so named because of its association with the pharaohs of ancient Egypt. It’s depicted on countless ancient Egyptian sculptures and hieroglyphs. Possibly the oldest breed of domesticated dog in the world, this breed is believed to date back to 4400 B.C., according to the Pharaoh Hound Club of America.

Remarkably, today’s Pharaoh Hounds differ little in appearance from their ancient ancestors. These dogs are sleek and sinewy, with short coats and tons of speed. Bred for rabbit hunting, this breed is the national dog of Malta where they remain highly revered and cherished.

The Pharaoh Hound is classified as a medium-sized dog, reaching a height of 25 inches. The AKC mentions this breed’s unique tendency to “blush.” When excited and happy, its nose and ears turn deep pink.

If you plan to fence in a Pharaoh Hound, choose a fence at least 5-feet high, as he’s a keen and adept jumper. This breed’s history as hunting dogs make them good chasers, and you should take every precaution to keep them contained either inside the house, within the confines of a fence, or on a leash, as they’ll chase other animals when given the opportunity. Inside their home, Pharaoh Hounds tend to become couch potatoes.

They require little grooming other than the occasional rubdown with a hound glove and a regular bath. This breed is often sensitive to the chemicals in shampoos, so take care when bathing him to use only hypoallergenic dog shampoos.

Because of the way they’re bred, the Pharaoh hound is not terribly susceptible to genetic diseases, unlike other breeds. They’re generally healthy, easy-to-keep dogs that live to the ripe old age of 12 to 14 years.
As temperament goes, Pharaoh hounds are friendly and playful. They’re also extremely intelligent.

If you feel the need to have one, it can cost you as much as $7,000 – mere pennies compared to the top dog on the list.
