17. Canadian Eskimo Dog
An Arctic breed of working dog, the Canadian Eskimo Dog is one of the oldest breeds in North America. Sadly, this beautiful dog is threatened with extinction. According to Wikipedia, only 300 purebred Canadian Eskimo Dogs were in existence in 2008:
‘’Although once used as the preferred method of transportation by Inuit in the Canadian Arctic, by the 1960s traditional working dog teams became increasingly rare in the North. Contributing factors to the breed’s decline include the increasing popularity of snowmobiles for transportation and the spread of infectious canine diseases.’’
Between 1950 and 1970, The Royal Canadian Mounted Police intentionally destroyed Inuit sled dogs. The exact number of dogs that were killed is unknown, but the figures range from 1,200 to 20,000.
This dog is loyal and devoted to their master – the Canadian Eskimo Dog bonds deeply with their human family.
Since they were originally bred as working dogs, they need a lot of exercise on a daily basis. However, they are suitable for dog sports and will thrive when given a job to perform.
They are very trainable and submissive dogs, but need an authoritative and consistent master who will exhibit leadership skills. The dog needs to learn from puppyhood that the owner is in charge. The Canadian Eskimo Dog is an intelligent breed that will listen to your commands and obey your rules - if you know how to be a pack leader.
Canadian Eskimo Dogs have strong prey drives and need to be properly socialized from an early age in order to get along well with other dogs and animals.
They have a life span of around 13 years and the average puppy price is approximately $1,200.
