18. Saluki

The Royal dog of Egypt, the Saluki is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world. They are also known as Persian Greyhounds and there are petroglyphs and rock arts in Iran that depict Saluki-like dogs accompanying hunters from ca. 8000–10,000 BCE. Saluki-like hounds were also found on the potteries from Susa, Iran. This dog breed has connections to the Avesta, Bible, Koran and Imperial China.

According to Wikipedia, ‘’modern breeding in the west began in 1895 when Florence Amherst imported a breeding pair of Salukis from Lower Egypt and began working to popularize the breed. The first registered Salukis in the western studbook were Cyrus and Slongha Peri imported from Iran and registered with the DWZRV.’’

These gracious, slim dogs are very loving family companions that get along great with kids. The dog needs a firm master, but doesn’t react well to harsh discipline. Instead, the owner has to be calm and consistent and clearly define the house rules.

Although they may not look like it, the Saluki is an avid hunter that has a natural instinct to chase and kill non-canine animals. Even when they are properly trained and socialized do not leave them unsupervised around other pets, including birds, guinea pigs, hamsters and rabbits.

Since they are natural born hunters, they require a lot of physical activity and not all dog owners will be able to keep up with their needs. It is recommended to take them on a run while riding a bike. The 1996 edition of the Guinness Book of Records lists a Saluki as being the fastest dog, reaching a speed of 68.8 kilometers (42.8 mi) per hour.

Their average life expectancy is around 10 years and they are prone to some genetic eye diseases and cancer. Saluki puppies cost from around $1,000 to $3,000.
