4. German Shepherd
German shepherds have not been around for that long as a breed. And despite being only around since the very late 19th century (1899), they have become one of the most popular breeds worldwide. Originally, they were envisioned as shepherd dogs (hence the name), but it soon became obvious that they can do much more.
Thanks to a very unique combination of strength, trainability, obedience and intelligence, over the years, German shepherds found work in many areas. For instance, they are used in search-and-rescue, as military and police dogs and as assistance dogs.
In short, whenever we need a dog to fulfill a role, the first choice will usually be the German shepherd. Their versatility makes them one of the most popular working breeds while many people also love them for their companionship, as pets.
