5. Bergamasco Shepherd

If you thought Pulis have weird coat, just take a look at the Bergamasco Shepherd. This lovely but strange-looking dog has distinct dreadlock-looking flocks or mats that can grow all the way down to the ground each year and need to be cut. However, they don’t shed and they are surprisingly easy to groom.

Bergamascos were originally bred for herding purposes in the Italian Alps, in the area near the city of Bergamo. Today, of course, they are bred more for companionship and competition than for their original duties. These dogs are caring, obedient, gentle, patient and observant. Because of these qualities, they make great family dogs. They tend to form strong attachment to their owners and they are extremely loyal.

As for the size and appearance, they are medium-sized dogs, generally fairly proportional, with a somewhat rustic appearance, due to the dreads. Bergamascos don’t normally suffer from any particular illnesses and live up to 14-15 years.
